Being as it’s summer, and beautiful weather for a vacation, I figured it would be in my best interest (and yours) to actually update my blog — this time with travel tips!

Over the last couple of months I’ve been making a lot of trips. Illinois, Wisconsin, and I’m even making my second trip to Florida in a week. For travel, and summer in general, I really like to narrow down what I carry in my bag.

Please keep in mind I keep my cosmetics separate from my bathroom necessities, which include my favorite body and face cleansers, shampoo and conditioner (travel sizes), a razor, lotion, deodorant, body spray, a couple nail files, a buffer, tweezers, and a nail clipper!  If I’m gonna be gone for more than a couple of days I’ll grab whatever polish I’m wearing to touch up if necessary as well.

Of course there’s the absolute necessities for anyone’s cosmetic bag:

  • Moisturizer with SPF.  This is dire for if you’re going to be outside.  The sun is directly responsible for the majority of the signs of aging.  Don’t want wrinkles?  MAKE SURE YOU WEAR SPF!  I love Olay Complete moisturizer for sensitive skin with SPF 15.
  • A good, long-wearing foundation.  You don’t want it streaking and sweating off your face, do you?  I’ve become a huge fan of Mirabella Full Coverage liquid foundation.  I definitely wouldn’t say it’s full coverage (more like medium), but you can also mix it with moisturizer to make a delightful tinted moisturizer.  The consistency is wonderful, and it’s easy to blend and use.
  • Eyeshadow base.  You need this year round, and can’t ever forget it.
  • Gel eyeliner, or long-wearing pencil eyeliner.  You need to make sure your eyeliner isn’t running!  Gel liner tends to be waterproof (I wear mine in the pool), and Urban Decay pencil liners don’t budge — especially if you set them with a matching shadow!
  • Waterproof mascara.  The only waterproof mascaras that don’t irritate my eyes are by L’Oreal and Cover Girl.
  • A good blush or bronzer.  Really, keep it as natural looking as possible in the summer.  I see too many women walking around wearing a blush that isn’t suited for such bright light.  You need very little to define your cheek bones.  Trust me, I have none and barely use any!
  • Brow fill (if you need it, I sure as hell do!).
  • A small selection of shadows.  I keep as minimal as I can in my bag.  Typically there are three colors I wear regularly, and if I can get away with just taking those with me…. I will.
  • A couple options for lipstick and lipgloss.  And by a couple, I mean just a couple.  A good daytime color and evening color are fun, but what are you really gonna wear if you’re sitting on the beach?

As for carry-on luggage, the 3-1-1- rule really limits what liquids and gels you can carry.  Here’s what I recommend:

  • A small tube of toothpaste.  Keep your breath fresh!
  • A lipgloss and a chapstick to keep your lips looking good when you get off the plane.
  • A body spray.  I bought an empty 2 oz bottle from Wal-Mart and poured some of my favorite body spray in it.  Good for travel, good for my purse.
  • Eye drops or a tiny bottle of contact solution.  This is vital if you wear contacts.  Mine can randomly drive me crazy and if I didn’t have this, I’d be screwed!

I know it seems like a lot, but really — it’s not.  I can fit all of the above in a small cosmetics case, and another small bag for my bathroom items.  Barely takes up any room in a small suitcase!

Is there anything you think I’m leaving out, or anything you think I didn’t need to put?  Let me know in the comments!  I’m always looking for and loving suggestions!

Give me a moment while I try to think of something negative about this product…. Yeah, I don’t think that is going to happen.  Redken Wool Shake 08 is a newer product from their urban style collection.  It’s described as a “gel-slush” that adds texture and volume to the hair, as well as decently firm hold (like a messy or piece-y look?  this is perfect).

Price: $22
Availability: Most salons carry Redken products, unless they’re sold out good luck not being able to find this product.

Product Details: [Taken from Redken.com] Innovative gel-slush adds extreme volume, texture and a high-fashion, semi-matte topcoat.

To use this product, shake vigorously and apply to dry hair.  Manipulate the hair using fingers to twist and separate strands to create your desired look.  For short hair, or to work on a small area, it can be useful to spray the product directly onto your fingertips to apply only where needed.  Make sure to begin applying smaller amounts.  You can always spray more to build the product in your hair, but you don’t want to put in too much of any product, it will be noticeable and unflattering!

What do I really like about this product? As a girl with short hair, it’s hard to find a good product to use that won’t make my hair feel greasy and look unnaturally separated by the next morning.  With Redken Wool Shake, I find that I can have the most control and that it’s matte finish provides me with the look I’m going for.  It never leaves me looking unkempt the next morning, and I actually have to shampoo my hair less (if you know me, you know I do NOT like shampooing my hair!).  This product is like having a styling pomade or clay with a hairspray.  It’s an all-in-one type of product, which to me really warrants the retail price.  If I weren’t licensed, I’d still pay full price for it because it works that well.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more versatile product.  I’ve had excellent luck using this on short, medium, and long hair styles.  It creates the perfect amount of definition, and can create numerous styles due to its matte finish and texture.  Don’t worry, unless you spray in a ridiculous amount, it’s not going to make your hair hard as a rock like most hair sprays.

All in all, who would I recommend this product to?  Absolutely everyone.  It would be perfect in a roller set for those of you looking for gorgeous beach waves, just spray this directly at the base of each roller for unbeatable volume.  It’s perfect for short styles because it adds so much texture.  This really is an unbeatable product, I’m not sure I’ll ever switch to another styling product for daily use!  Plus, the bottle isn’t massive and can fit in my purse.

Readers, have you tried Redken Wool Shake?  What did you think of it?  Has your stylist tried to persuade you into purchasing this product, did you buy it and why or why not?  Sound off in the comments!

I know, I know.  I missed posting a blog yesterday — so I’m hoping this makes up for it!

I’ve been looking for good and easy lower body workouts that will help to tone and firm up the lower half of the body.  This particular one I stumbled across requires little time for busy bodies like myself (and like most of you out there!).  This is easy to do if you travel and don’t have access to the gym!

If you’re short on time, this quick lower body workout will hit all the major muscles of the legs, including the glutes, hips, thighs and calves.  For a short workout, complete one circuit of each exercise using a challenging weight.  If you want a more advanced workout, complete 2-3 circuits with rests in between each one. Personally, I do the first set of squats without assistance — I don’t own a resistance band.  I also rest my shoulders on the floor and lift my rear up as opposed to the ball butt lift since I don’t have a ball.  I recommend adding 25 crunch/leg lifts (you know, where you have your legs at a 45 degree angle from the floor and pull them in when you go up for your crunch) to exercise your abdominal muscles.  Super easy to do if you’re a busy person and don’t have much time, or if you travel a lot and don’t have access to a gym!  Of course free weights are extremely inexpensive (I own a pair of 5 lb ones, for reference), easy to travel with, and can work your shoulders and arms as well.

Try this out for a couple of weeks, and tell me how it works for you!  I try to do it 4-5 times a week!

Eye Empire

Like rock music?  Check out the new band Eye Empire featuring members of Switched, Submersed, and Dark New Day.

As a huge fan of rock music myself, I had to give these guys a shout out on my blog.  With excellent guitar riffs, hard-hitting drums, and excellent vocals — this is definitely a band to check out and keep an eye out for!  They’ll be going places (also, across the country this summer touring!  You should go, I’ll be at a few of the shows myself!).

The following is taken from the band’s MySpace page:

It has been said “You must first be Young and Dumb before you can be Old and Wise” and the guys of Eye Empire couldn’t agree more. Between the 5 of them, they have released 11+ albums, 9+ singles and been a part of 6+ soundtracks and multiple video games. They’ve toured everything from Ozzfest to the Jager tours through cities across the U.S. and Europe but feel there is so much left to learn and much more room to grow.

With the past behind them and the future dead in their sights, Eye Empire looks to breakout with a unique blend of musicianship, experience and song writing finesse. They look to reach for new heights and beyond, justifying years of hard work, dedication and faith.

Check out their tunes and add them at the following!

And, all these guys are so fan-oriented that they have their own Twitter accounts!  I highly recommend following them.  Honestly, they actually update (unlike yours truly who has Twitter-neglect).

B.C. Kochmit (guitar/vocals)
Garrett Whitlock (drums)

Sugarpill Cosmetics is a custom line of vibrant, richly pigmented, velvety pressed eyeshadows and sparkling loose powders.

Amy of Sugarpill Cosmetics (AKA Shrinkle) was kind enough to send me some of her products for review.  I know, I know it’s been awhile of me getting around to it.  I just graduated school, plus I wanted to make sure I got a decent use out of the products prior to posting the review.  I don’t like using something once, and telling you how I feel about it!

When I received my package I was thrilled, not only are the boxes printed with the Sugarpill logo, but inside the products are wrapped in a hot pink tissue paper.  The boxes themselves are absolutely adorable, and obviously took a long time to create.

In this adorable box were four eyeshadows and six loose eyeshadows, all of which richly pigmented and beautiful colors.  I couldn’t wait to try them!

First, I’ll begin with my review of the loose eyeshadows. I’m personally not much of a loose eyeshadow person.  They can be messy to travel with, and often have a lot of fall-out on the cheeks.  While Amy’s were no different in that aspect (there will always be some fall-out from a loose shadow and we all need to get over it if we’re going to use them), the colors were so rich and full of gorgeous glitter I couldn’t be upset.

I loved how versatile these were.  Not only could you apply them so that the coverage was sheer, you could layer it on or apply it wet for a vibrant color that will last all day!  Here are some photos of the pigments.  I swatched them on my arm with a q-tip, so they’re about half as intense as when they’re applied over a base with a brush.  How is THAT for coverage? My personal favorite is Hysteric. It’s a beautiful violet with green shimmer and sparkles added into the mix. Very innovative on Amy’s part! Goldilux is also wonderful and I love to throw a little of it at the inside corners of the eyes to really make them pop (a perfect modern edition to basic pin-up looks).

My only complaint regarding these is the same as for any loose eyeshadow — they may be too messy for new users, and of course there’s the issue of if it spills.  Otherwise, these are fantastic and easily worth every penny (you get such a vast amount of product for the price, I’m not sure I’ll ever go through a full bottle).

Next, are the eyeshadows.  Oh the eyeshadows.  I don’t have enough nice things to say about them.  Blending?  Piece of cake.  While these have a subtle shimmer, they’re mostly matte and blend much easier than brands with similar colors — for example, Make Up For Ever.  Personally, I’ve always had a problem blending many matte eyeshadows. The consistency is a little off which leaves to be undesired, and spotty finishes. Not for Sugarpill Cosmetics, it’s obvious as a consumer Amy took these issues into consideration when creating her brand. It’s easy for the average user.

Color?  Richly pigmented, opaque, and not too shimmery.  These go on true to how they appear in their pans!  Even without a base these go on exceptionally evenly, and are long-wearing to boot.  Quite frankly, they can be a little bit difficult to get off the eye!  How often do you get to have that happen to you?! If I weren’t so apt to wash my face on a daily basis, I’d love to sleep in these just to wake up with fresh looking eyeshadow in the morning. They really don’t budge!

Amy’s line of eyeshadows may not be fully extensive (you won’t see any browns or taupes here), the bright colors which can be so hard to find are perfect for your collection.  I only took off one lippie for the sake of the lack of colors, and that this might be a turn-off for some buyers.  Other than that, I think that you must own at least one of these for yourself!
